This video reviews return techniques for beginners. On the return, your goal is to get the ball as deep in your opponent’s side of the court as you can to keep them back. Doing this will give you more time to get to the kitchen line.

If a ball is served to your backhand, one technique to return it is to chip it. To do this you’re going to bring your paddle back to your shoulder, step with your front foot, push through the ball, and slice it. If the ball comes to your forehand, you’re going to handle it the same way. You want to make sure you don’t wind your paddle back too far because if you hit it too hard, it’s going to fly. Once you finish the hit, then you’re going to follow it into the kitchen.

Hitting the ball too hard may also cause it to be a line drive, which won’t give you enough time to get to the kitchen. The object is to slice it and have it loft deep.
